Preface (Pyramid Edition, 1971)

You Are Extraordinary (1967)

This book brings a simple personal message to you, the reader. If you peruse its pages you will realize that you are, indeed, a remarkable and extraordinary person. You are probably already aware that you are not precisely like anyone else; you will learn that by nature you are not approximately like anyone else in the way your mind and body work. Many have been helped by this book in their religious thinking and in solving problems of physical and mental health. Bernard Rimland, in the American Psychologist, has written, "It has more to say of value to psychologists than most moderate-sized libraries of psychology books."

This book brings more than a personal message to the reader. It bring a simple message to society and to historians for the simple reason that it becomes clear that what is true for you, the reader, is true for everyone else, and has been since history began. The only kind of people who exist or have existed on earth are the individual kind--those who are not approximately like anyone else. It is these people who founded our country; it is they we have to live with as husbands, wives, parents, children, neighbors, business associates, schoolmates, bosses, employees, co-workers, friends and enemies. Part of the fun of life is having real appreciation for other people who are as distinctive in makeup as we individually are.
